Jewish Funders Network visit

Nov 28, 2012 | Category: CGAP News

CGAP at Cass was pleased to host a working seminar in October for seven members of the Jewish Funders’ Network-Israel, led by its Director, Maya Natan. This explored new developments and ongoing challenges for philanthropic foundations in the UK, comparing and contrasting these with developments in Israel.

Professor Cathy Pharoah gave an overview of current UK trends and was joined in this by Charles Keidan, the outgoing director of the Pears Foundation, in the UK.  Dr Peter Grant, who leads Cass’s Master’s in Grantmaking and Philanthropy , explored foundation programmes’ decisonmaking around the nature of a ‘good grant’, the selection of fields and approaches to impact expectations and impact assessment, and the kinds of transformations that move ‘simple gifts’ towards successful social investments. Professor Jenny Harrow cited two recent areas of foundation research at Cass, the micro-level issue of communicating grant refusal and the macro-level area of a network of UK foundations undertaking advocacy directly, in the  area of women’s prison reform. These together raised issues of foundations’ actions’ practices and responsibilities, within their subsector, within the third sector generally, and to governments and wider communities.
